Willamette Rugby Football Club WRFC - Willamette University - Salem, Oregon

Rugby returned to Salem, Oregon and Willamette University in 2006.

The Willamette Rugby Football Club (WRFC) plays in the Pacific Northwest Rugby Football Union's (PNRFU) Division 2 - South League. For the 2009-2010 season, Western Oregon, Portland State, Reed, Oregon Tech and Southern Oregon join WRFC in that league. The team also schedules "tours" and "friendlies" during the year against Oregon, Oregon State, Whitman and other collegiate teams.

WRFC players join the club with a variety of rugby backgrounds. For some, their first game of rugby will be played at Willamette,  while others will bring high school, club and collegiate experiences to the WRFC. You can learn more about the WRFC's team members by clicking the  "Meet the Team" link above.

While Mike Scott is WRFC's head coach and Anthony Lally is the Assistant Coach, it is WRFC members who are responsible for the club's growth and success.  In the 2008-2009 season,  over 35 players registered to the club through the USA Rugby “CIPP” registration process - almost doubling WRFC's rolls since its 2006 return to Willamette’s campus.  These team members also coordinate the club's  practice and game schedules as well its fundraisers. The first XV are named each week, not by the coach, but by the WRFC team captains. So earning -- or keeping -- a spot on the first XV requires recognition and support between teammates more so than anything else.

During the 2007-2008 academic year, WRFC was recognized by Willamette's Student Life Office as among the top student club or organizations on campus.

WRFC welcomes for Willamette ruggers to return to Salem for its annual "WRFC vs. Old Boys" match. More information about the Willamette Old Boys is found by clicking the "Old Boys" link above. In addition, WRFC recognizes a "Fan of the Match" for each game. Information about the "Fan of the Match" award and recent winners are found by clicking on the "Wild and Fanatic Fans" link above.

McCulloch Stadium,  8900 Mission Street, SE, located in neighboring Bush Pasture Park is the home field for WRFC. McCulloch Stadium, seats 2,500  and has a Fieldturf field. It is also the home field for Willamette's football team.  WRFC plays its home rugby games using the football field's markings. Admission to WRFC home games is free. Directions to McCulloch Stadium can be accessed by clicking the "Schedule" link above.

WRFC members are encouraged to continue their academic and athletic endeavours overseas. During the 2009 spring semester, WRFC members attended universities and played club or collegiate rugby in New Zealand and Northern Ireland.

William Duvall serves as WRFC's on-campus advisor.
